Just before leaving Far Far Away to deliver again Arthur, Fiona reveals to Shrek that she is pregnant, after which he exhibits an extra anxious side to his persona and had vivid nightmares of being a father. However, this was principal because of Shrek feeling guilty of ruining the kid's life as he considers having an ogre will not bode nicely with him. Shrek showed an utter disregard for personal hygiene and had little to no manners.
However, Donkey points out that the sun is setting causing Fiona to rapidly retire into the mill. When bringing her a flower that night Shrek overhears Fiona speaking to Donkey about how no one could love an unsightly monster. Shrek thinks she's speaking about him, and enraged and hurt, he goes and brings Farquaad and his knights to take her to his castle. However, Shrek continues to be not joyful, so after an intense argument, he apologizes to Donkey, with the latter convincing Shrek to get Fiona back. Shrek takes a mud shower and then travels into the woods to hold up indicators to maintain folks away from his land.
