She dies not long after giving start to their son, and, after a large ape kills Lord Greystoke, Kala, a feminine ape who's just lately lost her child, adopts the infant and calls him "Tarzan," "white pores and skin" in the ape language. As Tarzan grows, he has torn between the world of the apes and the secrets of the shoreline cottage the place he was born, although he does not know this. The battle only grows extra intense when another crew of nautical no-goodniks abandons their passengers -- together with an absent-minded American professor and his spirited daughter, Jane -- on the seashore.
