Newman stated Stanton had thought up of many ideas for how he wanted the music to sound, and he generally followed them as he found scoring a partially silent film troublesome. Stanton needed the entire score to be orchestral, but Newman felt limited by this concept particularly in scenes aboard the Axiom and used electronics too. Stanton also wanted the lighting to look practical and evoke the science fiction movies of his youth. He felt Pixar had captured the physics of being underwater with Finding Nemo, so for WALL-E, he needed to push that for air. It was whereas rewatching some of his favorite science fiction movies he realized Pixar's movies lacked the look of 70 mm movie and its barrel distortion, lens flare, and racking focus.
